It's taken me over two years to finish this chair. That includes me drop kicking parts of it into the cellar for six months at a time and threatening to throw it into the recycle bin. Oh, and having a bit of a cry when its legs were broken off whilst it was still drying, as well as when it was dropped and bent out of shape. I'm not sure yet how happy I am about it being part of our home yet. I've spent the last few months working on it almost daily and I'm a bit sick of the sight of it.

Like all the papier mache furniture I've made it's not turned out anything like I originally envisioned. It was meant to be a computer chair and rotate on wheels. Unfortunately I couldn't find a chair base that would take the weight of two adults.

Apparently it's technically a love seat as it's too small to be a two seater sofa but too big to be an ordinary chair!

The texture is that of most modern pulp furniture. It wasn't going to be red either. I was offered a box of old music sheets from someone's garage but haven't received them yet so I used up some red scrap paper left over from piñata making.

It's not quite finished yet. It needs some mould proofing (in this case I'll be spraying it with natural antibacterial agents) and then varnishing. In the mean time it's a usable seat in a house where there's often a fight for furniture!

I am already working on other pulp furniture projects but I'm struggling to get hold of any more shredded paper. I like the feeling of knowing the materials I've used have been rescued from a landfill. So far I've used around 15 litres of PVA and 15 bags of shredded paper. Conversational Crafthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03500413934356866364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1787765329898520558.post-69480803498592397852016-02-28T20:09:00.000+00:002016-02-28T20:09:01.328+00:00I'm still active!I haven't been on here for a while. I've even let several of the websites lapse. I like a challenge. I can make any kind of piñata. I miss the buzz of agreeing to make something and then getting off the phone only to think 'what the hell have I done!', and then creating something amazing. I've been learning how to make paper, books, then seeded paper and then buying a printer which I could then print onto that seeded paper with. I've also been teaching classes.

Then I started on marbling, and quilling/filigree as well as expanding my knowledge of origami (which I keep using to entertain random children) and other papercrafts. Until I filled in a few 3d papier mache canvases. Then expanded that to playing with fabrics and wax projects (including furniture polish) before starting on my current thing.

I've rescued bags upon bags of shredded paper from landfills and I'm turning it into furniture. So far I've almost finished a chair for my youngest daughter (photos on their way), a new chassis lounge style chair and a shelving unit. I'm hoping to have some sort of exhibition or display once I've finished. Although I'll probably need a couple more pieces. I'm onto my 4th blender, since the last one started to smoke and give off that electrical burning smell...

So basically I'm working on expanding, learning, facilitating learning as well as keeping up with all of the other things in my life. I thought I'd add a post here since I've not had any on-line presence for a while.

I'll neaten this up and add pictures eventually.Conversational Crafthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03500413934356866364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1787765329898520558.post-69829971049150161942016-02-18T12:31:00.004+00:002016-02-18T12:31:54.576+00:00Papier mache furniture

We have been asked to make a few mad hatters tea party themed piñatas, as well as Alice's adventures in wonderland ones! From mad hats to giant pocket watches to tea pots. I have to say that the Russian Samovar inspired tea pot was my favourite. One day I'm going to own a Samovar of my very own! We got extremely distracted by looking at pictures of them!
The more western style tea pot was a bit of a rush job made within two days for a local event. We've made lots of better teapots but often missed opportunities to take advantage of them. The best one was a prize at the pinatafest but unfortunately our designated photographer was distracted by the entertainment.
It's like a magician doing a trick with hankies when I try to remove it. The one where they remove one and there's miles and miles of them, one following the other, each a different colour. When I researched it I found that similar dreams are common.

I do believe in dream interpretation. Not that this signifies some external message like a tall, dark handsome man is going to appear in my life shooting rainbows whilst riding on a unicorn. Or some Freudian interpretation involving phallus and patriarchal envy - when it comes to things like that my subconscious is like me - direct with no messing around! Nor am I a Jungian - I believe he is over simplistic. I do believe however that dreams are a way of the subconscious expressing repressed thoughts and desires. Or perhaps an inner voice that's trying to warn, explain or tell us something that we already understand deep down but aren't dealing with in a conscious way. It may or may not be a useful message, but that message is unique and individual not something where an answer can be found straight out of a dream dictionary - especially if that dictionary comes from a different culture, with a different interpretation of symbols etched into their internalised culture.

Anyway for me this dream means that I am holding back too much. Repressing and holding onto things rather than working them out. I'm spread so thin that I don't know where to start letting it all out. Maybe standing out on a hill top and screaming my lungs out in a primal scream or the eternal yes would be a nice start but I don't have time for that. So instead I'm starting by writing this post. It feels like the wrong place to have a personal cathartic splurge. Which meant that perhaps posting here is the perfect act to breaking down those barriers and rules which are holding me in place, if that makes any sense.

Here is a public written promise to myself that every day I will try to find a way to release, or work on releasing some of that pent up passion, energy, those thoughts and feelings I keep to myself, or edit and to deal with the things I bury.
Sorry about the messy pictures - I didn't have time to tidy up and arrange it so there was at least an attempt to look professional and it kept flipping well raining so I couldn't just bung it outside for a few snaps - especially as it's covered in crepe paper. Conversational Crafthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03500413934356866364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1787765329898520558.post-650944176169628362014-06-29T22:57:00.001+01:002014-07-15T14:35:28.827+01:00lotions, potions and eczemaMy eldest daughter gets eczema, especially on her hands. It's horrible watching your child get skin so dry and cracked it bleeds... We've tried all sorts, our bathroom is full of e45/simple etc. products and the best thing we've found so far which is aqueous cream.

It seems unfair that the rest of us get to use fancy stuff, nice scented soaps, lotions and potions, bath bombs and the like. The list is endless! So we've started making our own. I thought I'd share a few of the recopies I've found and information on different oils.

Any information/comments/feedback you can add to this would be most welcome!

Essential oils for treating eczema
http://www.herbhedgerow.co.uk/20-best-oils-for-treating-eczema/ I also read somewhere that Manoi oil is good but that seems to basically be coconut oil with posh gardenia's mixed in and I can't remember my source! Apparently Meadowfoam seed oil is a good substitute for Jojoba containing higher levels of most fatty acids and nutrients whilst also being cheaper and a better lubricant.

handmade liquid soap
http://www.thankyourbody.com/homemade-liquid-hand-soap-2-easy-ways/ - This seems the simplest recipe online. Castile soap doesn't seem readily available in the UK They certainly didn't sell it in our supermarket! But any soap seems to work. In theory - we haven't actually tried this recipient yet! The plan is to use suitable soap and add a 5ml spoon full of glycerine to any batches that aren't soapy enough. We'll add pretty things such as dried fruit/flowers to the bottle to make it pretty. There are lots of soap bar recipes out there, my daughter has already made a few but I find liquid soap less messy!

Massage bars
http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/bathbody/ss/cocoabuttermass_2.htm - all the recipies I read basically used one part wax (either soya or beeswax) mixed with one part 'butter' (there's a list of different kinds of body butters and their properties bellow) and one part essential oils. I asked a friend of mine who's an expert in these things and she said we 'should' be okay to mix random quantities of different oils to use. Since then I've read lots of different information online, everyone seems to have a different opinion! We've been making and testing different batches and trying to work out what information is based on scientific information and what isn't!

Body butter
http://health.howstuffworks.com/wellness/spa-health/10-types-of-body-butter.htm#page=0 - here's a list of different kinds of body butter. Apparently it's the top ten! We used Shea butter as it's readily available, less likely to clog
pores than coco butter (very important when you're about to hit your
teens!), and reported to be good for eczema. We also got mango butter because we thought it would smell of mangos. For some reason ours doesn't!

Bath bombs
http://myfrugaladventures.com/2014/03/homemade-oatmeal-bath-bombs/. I've been told repeatedly that oatmeal is good for skin conditions and to put some in a Hessian bag (or the end of an old pair of tights) and tie it around the bath taps whilst the bath is running. Bath bombs sound like more fun, and something my child can add glitter to. Which is important. And a joy to clean up afterwards - possibly especially when mixed with oats...

Massage candles
http://candles.lovetoknow.com/How_to_Make_Massage_Candles - thought I'd stick this more grown up idea on the end of the list! A friend of mine gets eczema too and I thought it might be a nice idea to make some of these for her and her bloke for Christmas (fragrance free of course). I read a few recipes and they all seem pretty similar.

I like to try things until we get them 'right' or at least my perfectionist streak is satisfied! If I've time I'll add my pictures and notes to separate posts as we make a product we're happy with!
I was asked for a brightly coloured non traditional wedding cake with a heart and the bride and grooms initials. I didn't have time to take final pictures after it had been strung and the hatch cut. You can see the state of my house in the background, including the pieces of the new rabbit hutch. But as I'm always so behind with blog etc updates I thought I'd just slap these up here and at least have some pictures to show for my work!
We actually went to infant school together. I've made the usual wedding piñata as a present for her. But I thought the hen night deserved something really special

To give you a little clue as to what I'm making. It's still a work in progress and there's been bits of it all over the house until recently. I don't think the guy who came to repair the boiler will ever quite look at me the same again. Although I guess if there ever was a good time to invite campaigning party members or people selling religion door to door now would probably be a good time. I'm also going to reupholster my sofa. Sorry, will try to stay on track.

For some reason I have this in mind too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYoa0Xi8qo4

I can't find any images on-line, just the clip. Once it's finished it will be fun to make other things from the mould, not just piñatas, although I should probably finish one project first, learn to walk before I can run! And of course people keep placing orders which is most inconvenient when I have my own baby to work on. I miss the days before I got talked into working for other people!

So many projects, so little time. I didn't have much time so I started on both the pirate and the pirate ship. I ended up finishing the ship for the party though as I thought it would be quicker. It was a lot of fun to make and the little boy who it was for liked it so much that he didn't want to smash it up, he wanted to keep it so we turned it into a pull string version. I don't have any pictures of that as it was all a bit last minute. It was so nice to see his reaction because I don't often do kids piñatas, let alone see their faces when they receive them - except for my children who are a bit spoilt when it comes to piñatas. Children are so honest, especially younger ones like the lad this piñata was for, you know their reactions are genuine, and not just out of politeness or because they appreciate how much work goes into something like this.
It did start out looking more like a Viking long boat and took a lot of research on pirate ships and, although it's far from perfect I'm still quite proud of this piñata! X
I was asked to knock up a quick disco ball piñata for a childrens party this week. I love mirror balls and fairy lights and although this one went down a storm and was truly appreciated by the lucky birthday girl I'm still quite upset to see it go. I think I'm going to have to make one for our house.

We did used to have a giant one in the kitchen but got rid of it in the interests of taste when we moved. Unfortunately I've reverted to my disco ball ways and spangley ways (especially after discovering mirror ball fabric) so we're now having a bit of a mirror ball theme in our piñata house. Rest in pieces mirror ball. I don't envy whoever had to clean up all the mosaic tiles afterwards (obviously not made of glass).Conversational Crafthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03500413934356866364noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1787765329898520558.post-35654540746109062832013-10-16T13:10:00.000+01:002013-10-18T09:44:13.505+01:00Paintings

My two daughters share a bedroom. One is 4 and the other is turning 12 in a few weeks. I'm very proud of both of them - they help out with piñatas from time to time and are very smart young ladies. Although sometimes the youngest 'helping' is actually more of a hindrance, sometimes she's quite brilliant and I don't know what I'd do without either of them!
We've been recycling the same curtains for years now - in fact a ridiculous amount of recycling goes on in our house.
Anyway, this is more of a personal post and it's not really piñata related, I just wanted to add pictures of the paintings I've been making. I'm not very good at it but I'm learning as I go along. Although I have managed to sell a few of the ones I've painted so far somehow. And the kids are pleased with them. Probably much more so than anything we could buy in a shop because they have a say in how they turn out. I hope that they'll both contribute to their room with some of their own projects - especially as our fridge and freezer are practically buried in their art work/prizes/merit cards etc.Conversational Crafthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03500413934356866364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1787765329898520558.post-14875581166851710322013-10-16T12:27:00.001+01:002013-10-16T12:27:38.026+01:00Wedding heart pinata

This heart piñata was custom made for a Mexican themed wedding. The lucky bride and groom are currently on their honeymoon in Mexico. Where I'd personally like to be as the weather is starting to turn! It's the largest heart piñata I've made so far - measuring over a meter wide!

The banner was designed especially for the lucky couple by Sally Lock. The red heart is made with hand marbled paper and the flowers are bespoke from a selection of our most vibrant paper.Conversational Crafthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03500413934356866364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1787765329898520558.post-36477866026145035192013-10-16T12:21:00.000+01:002013-10-16T12:21:31.475+01:00Wedding card box

I wasn't quite sure how to do the logo as I find bubble writing much easier when it comes to piñatas so I feel I cheated a little by covering a cardboard box and putting it on but they seemed happy with it anyway!
I think if I do many more personal projects I'll have to ether sell off some of the old ones or organise some storage space somewhere else. I've already stuffed piñatas in friends garages and lofts! Which actually lead to a recent sale when one of them had a visitor but I'd grown quite fond of the Chinese dragon in question. In fact I'm not even sure if I have pictures! I've also got orders for a couple more so hopefully I'll get around to it this time.

Anyway, I should get off and go to bed. I've got orders to get on with and I'm behind on several blog posts as usual and I've been distracted by painting butterflies and 'paper-clips' (as my children call them). I'll add them to my list of projects to write about even though they're not piñatas! One day I'll nag my web guy into finishing the website and I'll be able to use this blog as it was intended - for personal use! My daughter says I should call it poo sticks because that's what it looked like when I was making the tree. It's now proudly hung in our bathroom. I'm very proud of my first papier mache canvas.
